Industrial Platform Scales for Warehouses

Platform scale is a term used to broadly describe weighing scales that have larger weighing surfaces than those found on a typical bench. The weight indicator often tends to be separate from the platform, or weighing surface, enabling the indicator to stand to one side out of the way, mounted on the wall, or as in some cases, mounted on a pillar.

Larger weighing platforms such as Adam Equipment's PT platform can be combined with steel ramps for easily transferring barrels, rolling cages and pallets (with the use of a mobile forklift) on and off the scale's weighing platform without the need for heavy lifting. Scales such as the PTM, include sturdy handles that allow operators to carry the platform between locations.

Certain variations of platform scales can be pit mounted (lowered into the floor) enabling pallet or fork lift trucks to stand on them with the items being weighed. Warehouse operatives can also weigh pallets of products in units using a platform scale with a check-counting indicator without the need to unpack and weigh products individually.

Choose from a wide range of platform scale sizes and variations, including heavy-duty, mild steel platforms with up to 3000kg capacities, IP-rated stainless steel platform scale varieties with pillar assembly, and durable, lightweight weigh-beams that support other platforms and cages.

Platform scale models marked with a black 'M' offer UK trade approved models for selling goods by weight.

Platform Scales Help

Q: How do platform scales work?

A: Without going into depths about how a scale works, platform scales broadly come in two types, first is a single cell base where a load cell is mounted between two frames and the load is applied to one side of the cell. This can sometimes be referred to as a cantilever type. The other type is basically a load cell mounted in each corner of the platform base and the weight applied is measured by the sum of the load cells. There are advantages and disadvantages with each method, but cost has an impact on the designs.

Q: What are the spatial requirements for platform scales?

A: All of our platform scales have custom sizes for you to choose from, however the overall area range will differ between the types of platform scale you are after. For example, a PT Platform scale ranges from 1000mm x 1000mm to 1500mm x 1500mm, whereas the CPWplus Weighing Scales begin at 300mm x 300mm and go to 900mm x 600mm. You will need to research our specific models to see which combination accurately fits with your spatial requirements.

Q: How to calibrate a platform scale?

A: Platform scales need to be calibrated externally using OIML approved calibration weights. Larger weighing platforms require the use of block calibration test weights with higher masses, whilst platform bench scales with lower resolution may use standard calibration weights.

To calibrate a platform scale, navigate to the calibration mode within the user interface of your scale or weight indicator model (we recommend referring to the manual for your particular model if you are unsure. Larger platforms may need to be connected to weight indicators via an RS-232 cable in order to complete calibration). From here, add calibration weights to the weighing pan one at a time and then remove, checking that the mass of the calibration weight reads correctly on the scale or indicator display. You will need to repeat this process 4-5 times working in descending order (e.g 50g, 20g, 10g, 5g, 2g) to complete the calibration procedure.

For a more in-depth procedure on how to calibrate platform scales, please see Adam Equipment's guide to calibrating the PT platform scale with an AE 403 weighing scale indicator.

Q: Which platform scale would you recommend for working with machinery?

A: The type of platform scale you should use will depend on a couple of things:

  • 1) The size and weight of the items to be weighed.
  • 2) The amount of surrounding space.
  • 3) Which weighing application you need.

If you regularly weigh large amounts of small screws, tools or parts, or wish to count these individually to ensure that you have the correct amount, you may consider a smaller platform scale with checkweighing and parts counting features such as Inscale's IFS platform scale.

If you work in engineering or manufacturing plants and weigh large machinery or parts by the crate load, you will need a larger platform scale with checkweighing features, such as the Adam PT combined with a GK indicator. A suitable checkweighing platform scale will ensure the weight of each crate is consistent and meets the pre-set weight value before dispatch.
