What is a platform scale?

A platform scale is a weighing scale with a larger surface, typically, for weighing palletised goods. Platform scales are usually situated on the floor, or may be sunken into a pit to make them flush with the ground or floor.

The weight indicator is separate from the platform, enabling the indicator to stand to one side out of the way, mounted on the wall, benchtop, or on a pillar.

Large weighing platforms such as Adam Equipment's PT platform can be combined with steel ramps for easily transferring barrels, rolling cages and pallets (with the use of a mobile forklift) on and off the scale's weighing platform without the need for heavy lifting. Scales such as the PTM include sturdy handles that allow operators to carry the platform between locations.

Pit-mounted platform scales enable pallet or fork lift trucks to stand on them with the items being weighed, as long as the capacity of the platform permits this. Warehouse operatives can also weigh pallets of products in units using a platform scale with a check-counting indicator without the need to unpack and weigh products individually.

Choose from a wide range of platform scale sizes and variations, including heavy-duty, mild steel platforms with up to 3000kg capacities, IP-rated stainless steel platform scale varieties with pillar assembly, and durable, lightweight weigh beams that support other platforms and cages.

Platform scale models marked with a black 'M' are trade approved for selling goods by weight.

How do platform scales work?

Platform scales broadly come in two types, first is a single cell base where a load cell is mounted between two frames and the load is applied to one side of the cell. This can sometimes be referred to as a cantilever type. The other type is basically a load cell mounted in each corner of the platform base and the weight applied is measured by the sum of the load cells. There are advantages and disadvantages with each method, but cost has an impact on the designs.

Which platform scale would you recommend for working with machinery?

The type of platform scale you should use will depend on a couple of things:

  • The size and weight of the items to be weighed.
  • The amount of surrounding space.
  • Which weighing application you need.

If you work in a shipping warehouse and weigh large machinery items by the crate load, you will need a larger platform scale with checkweighing features, such as the Adam PT combined with a GK indcator.. A suitable checkweighing platform scale will ensure the weight of each crate is consistent and meets the pre-set weight value before despatch.
