What is a CT scale?

Simply put, a carat scale (or CT scale) is a specialist type of jewellery weighing scale that can weigh in carat units. Many scales and balances only offer more common units such as grams, kilograms, ounces and pounds, but jewellery scales often require the use of more specialist units such as carats, taels and troy ounces. Carat scales are highly precise weighing devices that usually fit into the compact balance, precision balance or analytical balance category.

What is the difference between a carat and a karat?

Commonly confused, carats and karats are in fact two separate units, although they are both found in the jewellery industry. A carat is a unit of weight used to measure the physical size of a precious stone, such as a diamonds, rubies and emeralds. A karat is a measurement of the proportion of gold in an alloy which is measured out of 24. For example, 16 karat gold is 16/24 parts gold.
