Floor Scales Help

Q: Do I need a trade approved floor scale?

A: This will depend on your requirements. For general weighing and checkweighing procedures in warehouses, a non-approved floor scale should be sufficient. However, if you are looking to trade, buy or sell by weight, then you would need to ensure that your floor scale includes the correct approvals.

For example, UK scrap metal dealers will need to ensure that their floor scale is EC/ UK trade approved for selling scrap metal by weight. Similarly, jewellers or pawn shops buying gold in bulk will need to refer to the valuation guide for gold (determined by weight) and then weigh the gold on a trade approved scale to ensure the price is correct in relation to the weight.

We stock a variety of floor scales with trade approvals, weighing platforms such as Adam's PT may also be combined with the GK checkweight indicator for weighing larger amounts when trading.

Q: What is the difference between a platform scale and a floor scale?

A: Platform scales and floor scales are often interchangeable terms, however it is commonly accepted that a floor scale specifically refers to a weighing scale that is set up and operated on a floor surface, whereas a platform scale has a larger platform size or weighing surface that can support additional platforms or cages. Both types of scale can be used for weighing heavy objects such as barrels, kegs and sacks that cannot be weighed or lifted onto standard bench scales, however pallets of goods are often weighed on platform scales due to their large size.

Q: What are the benefits of using a floor scale?

A: Floor scales are highly versatile machines that offer a wide range of benefits over other types of scale, we have included just some of the possible benefits of using this type of scale below:

  • Not confined to a workbench: Floor scales are designed to be used on warehouse and factory floors. They have adjustable feet for maintaining stability.
  • Cheaper than platform scales: Floor scales are often cheaper than platform and pallet scales and have a similar array of features with smaller weighing pan sizes.
  • Reduce heavy lifting: Since these scales are designed for use on the floor they require little in the weigh of manual lifting onto the weighing pan when compared with other types of scales.
  • A variety of weight and resolution graduations: As platform scales work in heavier amounts, they tend to be less precise. Floor scales retain higher resolutions than platform scales and offer greater maximum weight capacities than bench scales. Therefore these scales make the perfect middle-ground between bench scales and platform scales.
