Should I purchase a mechanical or a digital scale for my classroom?

That depends on your lesson plan. If your students are young and inexperienced with weighing, a mechanical scale will do just fine in teaching them various applications, and they tend to be sturdy enough to resist mistakes and daily use.

If your students are more advanced and your lesson plan more complex, then a digital scale is usually more precise and they have more options for more sophisticated applications and smaller samples. Digital balances also have much faster results since there is no need to manually set the weight, which comes in handy during short class periods. When students no longer need to learn weighing principles, they are only interested in the result. Having a balance with quick results means your students will be able to be productive through the whole class rather than fiddle with the scale.
