What’s the Best Laboratory Weighing Scale for Me?

The world of laboratory scales is vast and often includes the widest possible range of weighing features and functions, so selecting the one that’s right for your specific needs can be a daunting task.

In this blog, were going to breakdown some of the main laboratory applications and recommend the laboratory scale or balance that we think suits it best, to ensure you find the instrument that’s right for you and your needs.

The best weighing scale for general lab weighing

For laboratory weighing procedures that require a simple to use and fast weighing scale for simple mass measurements, we recommend the Adam CBX Compact Bench Scale. This is a high accuracy bench scale that takes up just a small amount of space on a work bench, with a grade 304 and ABS plastic housing that is both easy to clean and durable. It also offers an impressive 200 hours of battery life, making it a good fit for field work.

The best scale for fieldwork

In the field, it’s important to have a scale that is both durable and portable, and the SJ-HS Compact Bench Scale from A&D is exactly that. With an impressive 2000 hours of battery life, users will not have to worry about running out of power, and the lightweight, compact design enable it to be picked up and transported with ease. The SJ-HS is also extremely easy to use and will provide quick, simple mass measurements when weighing on the go.

The best scale for precision weighing

Advanced laboratory weighing procedures can require a more precise weighing instrument, such as a precision balance or an analytical balance.

For a dependable precision balance – a balance that has is readable to 1 milligram – we would recommend the Adam HCB ‘Highland’ Portable Precision Balance. This is robust weighing scale that can deal with rigorous use, with an easy to clean exterior and a patented ShockProtect that works as a safeguard against accidental overload. The Highland is one of our most popular weighing balances as it can be used for a wide variety of lab weighing applications, such as chemical weighing, food and drink research and fieldwork.

For an even more precise instrument, the Adam ‘Luna’ Analytical Balance is a high accuracy laboratory balance that combines a simple user interface with advanced weighing functions such as dynamic weighing or density determination. Durability is at the forefront of the Lunas design, with tough ABS plastic housing and chemical resistant grade 304 stainless steel weighing pan which is both easy to clean and tough enough to deal with demanding lab work.

The best scale for weighing moving subjects

Weighing moving subjects such as animals or liquids can make weighing difficult, but many laboratory scales and balances feature a dynamic weighing function (sometimes known as animal weighing). We stock a number of lab balances that have the dynamic weighing feature, although we recommend the Adam ‘Equinox’ Precision Balance because of its wide range of maximum capacities and intuitive touchscreen display. The weight is determined in the form of an average value based on multiple weight measurement within a timeframe that is completely customisable in the settings menu. There is also a peak hold function that is capable of freezing the maximum weight value of your subject.

The best weighing scale for food testing purposes

For food testing applications, one of the most important characteristics of your lab scale or balance is to be east to clean and protected.

For a precision balance with an IP65 rating, we recommend the A&D FZ-i-WP Splashproof Precision Balance. The IP65 rating allows for the balance to be sprayed down and wiped after use, meaning it can be kept clean and hygienic when weighing messy food items, and the trade approved models can be used for items that are priced directly on weight. The FZ-iWP Slashproof Precision Balance also combines exceptional accuracy with handy features such as internal calibration and a 1 second stabilisation time.

The best mechanical laboratory scale

Durable and affordable, mechanical balances are crucial pieces of lab equipment for when power supply isn’t readily available. The Adam TBB Triple Beam Balance is one of the most popular mechanical scales currently on Inscale and is trusted to deliver accurate weighing results for simple mass measurement applications, as well as having a robust, durable build capable of dealing with rigorous use. The TBB is also extremely portable and can be a great option for fieldwork as users won’t have to worry about whether their balance is fully charged.
