Q: What is a medical scale used for?

A: Medical weighing scales are used for a variety of different applications which differ depending on whether the scale is a trade approved scale or a non-approved scale. However, medical weighing scales are mainly used to monitor the weight of patients.

Q: Who uses medical scales?

A: Medical weighing scales are used primarily by professionals such as doctors or within hospital or lab environments. Within these environments approved medical scales are required as it is vital to know the accurate weight of patients and be able to monitor this precisely. Other users include gym staff, health spas and personal trainers however individuals within these sectors tend to only work with non-approved weighing scales.

Q: What do Class approvals on weighing scales mean?

A: Medical devices are designated a 'Class' by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) depending on the level of risk associated with the device.

Class I approved scales
Class I approved devices are considered to have a moderate/ low risk to patients. These devices are typically unregulated and while they still need to be registered with the FDA, they usually do not require FDA clearance to be sold.
Class II approved scales
Class II approved scales are the standard for purpose-made medical devices such as wheelchairs, standard medical scales and testing kits. They are defined as having moderate/ high risk to patients.
Class III approved scales
Class III approved scales are the highest classification for a medical device and are considered to have high risk to the user or patient. This typically includes life support equipment, implants and health monitoring devices. Certain weighing scales and balances will have Class III approvals for use in medical diagnostics or when producing medications and pharmaceuticals.
