Pharmaceutical Balances Help

Q: What is the best pharmaceutical balance?

A: This will depend on how you intend to use your balance. Microbalances offer the highest level of precision of all laboratory balances and are particularly useful for measuring exceptionally tiny quantities of ingredients that are used in pharmaceuticals.

Class Approved or certified balances will be required in any scenario where pharmaceuticals are being produced to be sold since to ensure user safety; these balances are also required when carrying out medical diagnostics in hospitals and other professional medical environments.

A non-approved semi-microgram balance is usually adequate for most day-to-day research and testing activities in microgram (µg) units, whilst milligram balances including analytical balances, are used to measure items in sub-milligram (mg) ranges. Precision balances can be used in cases where exceptionally high resolution is not required.

Q: How are the different weighing modes used in pharmaceutical production and analysis?

A: All balances have built-in weighing modes that allow the user greater control and improved scope testing.

Parts counting allows the operator to programme a pre-set or known weight to ensure that all products of the same type meet the required limit, the effectively reduces the time to taken to prepare and weigh each product individually which is perfect when producing multiple tablets or supplements.

The checkweighing feature allows the operator to set low and high limits to ensure that all products weighed on the balance fall between these desired ranges, colour-coded displays and audible alarms are often found on these balances to alert the user to any weight discrepancies.

The percentage weighing function is a must for any laboratory production facility and allows the operator to set a total weight value which can be converted to a percentage (100%); from here, individual ingredients can be placed onto the balance to be weighed until the weight value reaches 100%. This function is particularly useful for weighing ingredients in ratios.
