Top Pan Balances

The term Top Pan Balance or Top Loading Balance refers to weighing scales and balances that have a pan that is not enclosed by the body of the machine. Top pan balances commonly attach the weighing plate to the top of the balance and relates to machines that have a resolution not requiring a draft shield to protect the weighing surface.

Inscale offers a wide selection of top pan balances that feature high performance and high quality precision. Our selection of balances caters largely to laboratory-based applications and are frequently used for conducting science experiments in school, college and university chemistry labs; they are also used or to cover precise weighing functions. We supply a large range of top pan balances from Adam Equipment, A&D Weighing and Kern.

Top Pan Balances Help

Q: What are top pan precision balances?

A: With a top pan balance the weighing pan is usually directly above the weighing mechanism. They typically have resolutions from 0.001g to 0.1g.

Top pan balances are used to weigh solid masses that do not require exceptionally high resolutions, which is where an analytical balance may be used. Whilst top pan balances offer less readability than an analytical balance, they allow measurements to be made quickly thus making it a more convenient choice when exact measurements are not needed. Top pan balances are also more economical than analytical balances.

Q: What is a top loading balance used for?

A: The top pan precision balances are used more often than not in laboratories or higher education chemistry classrooms, where there is a requirement to measure items below 0.1g, such as chemicals. There are other applications such as weighing of precious stones and even gunpowder for competitive shooting applications. Often preferred to be used for their speed and lower cost than the high precision or analytical balances.
