Jewellery Weighing Scales

Scene setting image for Jewellery Weighing Scales

Jewellery scales are used by jewellers to weigh semi-precious stones, diamonds and gold in carats. They often feature as portable pocket scales or precision balances with a high readability for weighing in sub-milligram divisions.

There are a diverse range of jewellery scales available, from analytical balances that can weigh small items such as gold leaf or diamond chips, to bench scale and pocket scales that are designed to weigh anything from precious gemstones and metals, to custom jewellery sets such as diamond necklaces and bracelets.

Most of our digital weighing scales provide carat measurement for precise gold weighing and accurate jewellery valuations. Our most sophisticated carat balances such as A&D's FZ-i trade approved precision balance, offer a wider spectrum of weighing units including Troy Ounces for weighing precious metals in the UK, Mommes for measuring pearls, and Taels used for measuring precious metals in Taiwan, Vietnam, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Inscale also provides trade approved scales required for buying and selling gold commercially, these are stamped units specifically for trade use and are generally identified by a black ‘M’ symbol. Battery-powered and pocket scales are also available for the jeweller on the move.

Q: Why do I need a scale to weigh jewellery

A: When buying or selling jewellery commercially you are required by law to use a fully certified trade approved scale. You will need to research which digital weighing scale is most suitable for your needs as different types of jewellery scale provide different features. Analytical and precision balances are useful for weighing gold and precious metals due to their high level of readability, accuracy and precision. Whereas a compact bench scale would be more suited to weighing precious stones.

Whilst many digital weighing scales provide a carat measurement, it would be best to check for this feature when selecting your purchase.

Q: How do I weigh jewellery?

A: Weighing jewellery essentially works the same as weighing any other type of product. Despite this, the type of measuring unit used may differ depending on your location and the type of jewel or metal you are weighing. In the UK, carats are preferred to grams when selling gold or diamond jewellery commercially, whilst troy ounces may be referred to when weighing large amounts of precious metals. In eastern Asian countries such as Japan, Thailand or Korea, Taels are used when measuring the weight of freshwater pearls.
