Retail Scales/Shop Scales
Retail Scales or Shop Scales, as they are sometimes referred to, are weighing machines that are used to calculate a price based on product weight.
In many countries it is a government requirement for the units to be approved to a standard often called Trade Approved. In the UK and across the European Community it is a legal requirement for anyone selling goods by weight to ensure the weighing scales they are using are fit for purpose.
These scales can be described differently which can cause confusion, trade stamped, trade approved, CE stamped, verified, class III approved, shop scales, OIML approved to name just a few. To ensure your digital weighing scale is correct or fit for purpose, you need to ensure the scale has a sticker with the letter "M" in black on it, a pale blue sticker with an identification number of the verifier (the person who has tested the accuracy) and a CE mark. Also ensure that all seals on the scale are intact. If you require more details on this, please do not hesitate to call us.

Q: Why do I need a trade approved scale for weighing food?
A: When selling commercially, scales with trade approvals are neccessary for ensuring the scale is working as indicated and that the weight of an item is correct and accurate.
From a business perspective, trade approvals from an official legislative organisation can help to safeguard your business if there is a discrepancy on items sold to customer by weight.
Many food-related businesses have used weight as the main factor when determining price. For example, until 2008 it was a legal requirement in the UK for bakeries to standardise the size of bread by weight, with standard sliced loaves measuring 800g and half loaves as 400g.
Other UK food-related businesses such as butchers shops still use weight in order to sell meat products in pounds, grams and kilograms. Whilst confectionary producers may require scales to accurately measure individual ingredients such as cocao powder, sugar and milk, when making chocolates to be sold in commercial supermarkets and shops.
